Owen's Newcastle contract lapsed on July 1 but although the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker apparently remained eager to stay in the Barclays Premier League, it appeared only the likes of Stoke and Hull were ready to make a concrete offer. They now appear to have been joined by reigning champions United, who have lost star man Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina striker Carlos Tevez since the end of last season. Owen suffered from a series of injury problems during his stint at St James' Park and Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be lining up a pay-as-you-play deal for the forward. The 29-year-old was believed to be on around £110,000 at Newcastle, for whom he scored 10 goals as they were relegated to the Coca-Cola Championship last season, but would be happy to take a reduced basic salary for a top-four club. Owen has failed to persuade England coach Fabio Capello that he has both the form and fitness to add to his 89 international caps but would relish the chance to forge a partnership with the Italian's first-choice striker, Wayne Rooney, at Old Trafford. I can't deny him that but is it possible that he could have picked any other team to play for. It's not that he needs the money ffs. How on earth can he justify signing for them. I've got images of Fergie rubbing his hands when he next comes to Anfield. From what I've seen/heard in the media we weren't interested in him so coming back wasn't an option. It also sounds like he didn't exactly have a lot of choice of premiership clubs and if it was the option between man u and hull, as a professional what would you pick? If he had the choice of say Arsenal as well then I wouldn't exactly be happy with him going to man u. It is going to be hard seeing him in a united shirt, although that will be made slightly easier with him looking so stupid with a huge chevron on his front. He has been pretty much permanently crocked for the last 3 years or so and this is most likely his last chance at a big club so I don't feel I can begrudge him that. I can't bring myself to cheer him on now (I did always look and hope he did well at Newcastle), but I'll still remember his Liverpool days fondly. Plus what could be better then Liverpool beating Man U to the premiership title and the CL trophy to really show what a bad decision he made all those years ago.

I think noone is to blame if he tries to take his chances. I always thought that MO was "punished" enough back 04/05, with us winning CL, and Real...well. But I always respected him as a player. Nevertheless, going to Manchester is like a punch in the stomach,and hard to take,and even harder to pay respect, for me. "The cup ended up with Stevie G in his room. His girlfriend wasn't here, so he had the cup in his bed instead."

I'm beginning to think that Rafa has missed an opportunity by signing him. I'm sure Owen would have walked to Anfield given the opportunity. Over the past few years, Rafa has been known to pick up Bosman's so why was Owen overlooked when we need more firepower up front and have limited funds? I pray that it doesn't work out at Old Toilet - it's gonna be very hard to swallow seeing Owen help them win silverware (shudders)
